On Site Conservation: July 3-7, 2005

Pinar Aykaç (METU, Ankara), who will be documenting the conservation interventions, joined the team this week. The reconstruction of the vault covering the room XXVIII and the reinforcement of a gap in the north wall of room XXV has been carried out. Another area that needed consolidation is the cistern below the guards' station in the Lower Agora (see Lower Agora, this week). Using photographs, sketches and the necessary measurements we did a detailed documentation. The back wall of the vault had partially collapsed and all strata behind it could be observed. Since it is a crucial area for archaeological information, we had to examine the situation before any intervention was carried out.

During this week, the documentation process went on with the vaults below caldarium 1 of the Roman Baths, the vaulted space in the northern eatery, installed inside the West Portico of the Lower Agora, the vault covering the room XXVIII and the gap in the north wall of courtyard XXV in Domestic Area. In the last structure, pointing work started on the north wall of courtyard XXV.
