The North-West Heroon: August 28, 2008

The anastylosis of the North-West Heroon was focused on the installation of the superstructure of the monument which has been re-erected during the past years.

The roof of the relatively small naiskos of the Heroon was originally covered with stone slabs in the form of interlocking tiles. The north-south span distance of the cella was divided into two parts by the help of a central arch running between the east and west walls. This arch was completed in the 2008 season and was reconstructed using its original voussoirs as well as some newly carved supplemental pieces.

Re-building of this arch, provided the possibility to install roof slabs at least on the north section of the super structure. Here, the 154 cm long stone slabs could be carried, on the north end by the pediment and on the south end by the arch.

Out of the numerous fragments of original roof slabs, four of the nine blocks that would have covered the north part of the roof could be re-assembled and installed on the monument by the end of the campaign. The rest of the roof slabs with intricate fitting details will be exhibited on the ground, next to the monument.
