The Roman Baths: Aims 2009

June 15, 2009

In 2009, we intend to continue the long-standing and large-scale excavations both inside and outside the Roman Baths, the largest monumental structure of ancient Sagalassos.

Following the previous campaigns, the main focus of the 2009 excavation season in the Roman Baths is intended to be Frigidarium 1, and more exactly its so-called Central Hall, located between the four main ashlar pillars. The excavations intend to encompass the entire extent of the Central Hall. Secondly, in association with the previous aim, a possible eastern extension of the Central Hall needs to be investigated. Further exploration along the outer face of the eastern wall of the bathing complex is also planned, in order to study the eastern extremity of the complex and check whether or not other rooms are located there. Another aim, to be planned in parallel with the progress of the conservation works, is the continued excavation of the central servicing areas. These possibly provide access to the lower floor level of the complex, as well as could provide clues for the diachronic and functional changes attested in the adjoining rooms, such as Caldarium 2 and 3, and Tepidarium 2.
