The Potters’ Quarter: Aims 2009

June 15, 2009

We plan to continue the open area excavations in the zone of the so-called Coroplast Workshop(s) in the Potters’ Quarter of Sagalassos.

The preliminary results of the 2004 and 2008 campaigns in the area of the Coroplast Workshop(s) indicated the possible existence of a set of adjoining workshops, active in the late Roman period in the production of mold-made wares, such as oil lamps, figurines and oinophoroi. In 2009, we would like to explore the area possibly representing the westernmost workshop of the series. In order to do so, the open area excavation is requested to be extended towards the south, in the (open?) spaces in front of the workshop, in order to determine the limits of the activity area and possible diachronic changes, as well as to the north, in order to further define the rooms of the workshop itself, the circulation pattern between the rooms, their function and possible diachronic changes. The excavation’s northernmost limit is determined by the terrace wall, which is still visible at the surface.
